Abstract

The present study examines the impact of participatory film creation on community engagement within the rural Village of cinema Kepunduhan in Tegal Regency, Indonesia, starting in 2013. A qualitative methodology involving in-depth interviews and interactive observations was employed in this study to uncover the community’s role in social and cultural development. This paper presents an analysis of the Participatory Film-Art Socio-Cultural Transformation Model. It suggests that society’s active involvement in producing artistic films to reform social and cultural values might lead to changes in creativity. The available empirical data suggests that community engagement has progressed through several phases of education, awareness, and recognition. The implementation of the participatory approach has significantly improved the cinematographic abilities of the inhabitants of the hamlet, therefore fostering cultural conservation, economic growth, and community empowerment. The Participatory Film-Art Socio-Cultural Transformation Model shows that participatory art, mainly filmmaking, promotes rural development by integrating local cultural elements with cinematography. Its successful implementation in Sinema Kepunduhan Village illustrates how this model can transform rural communities from passive consumers to active producers while fostering sustainable socio-cultural development, making it adaptable and developable in other villages.
